What a Private Pilot certificate lets you do
The Private Pilot certificate is the first FAA certificate most pilots earn. It gives you the freedom to fly for personal travel and recreation, and it is the required starting point for the Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot certificate.
- Carry passengers, including friends and family
- Fly in daytime and at night under visual flight rules
- Fly to airports across the United States
- Share operating costs with your passengers
- Continue to Instrument, Commercial and beyond
Private pilots cannot be paid to fly. To fly professionally, continue to the Career Pilot Program.
How your training is structured
Each stage builds on the last, with clear goals so you always know what comes next.
Pre-solo fundamentals
Learn aircraft control, takeoffs and landings, radio calls and emergency procedures with your instructor.
First solo
Once your instructor endorses you, fly the aircraft alone in the traffic pattern for the first time.
Cross-country and night
Plan and fly trips to other airports, navigate solo and complete your night flying training.
Knowledge test and checkride
Pass the FAA knowledge test, finish a mock checkride and fly your practical test with an examiner.
Minimum flight experience
To take the Private Pilot checkride under 14 CFR Part 61, the FAA requires at least 40 hours of flight time that includes the training on the right. Most students need more than the minimum, and your advisor will give you a realistic estimate.
You also need to pass the FAA knowledge test and hold a current medical certificate.
